Sow the Seeds of Victory

Auburn hair loose, a young woman strides forward across a freshly plowed brown field, scattering seed from her outstretched right hand while cradling a round wooden seed basket against her left hip. In Sow the Seeds of Victory she wears a red Phrygian cap and a gown patterned as the American flag, its blue star bodice above a red-and-white striped skirt, with trees on the low horizon under a pale sky.

Made for lovers of wartime graphics, patriotic history and full-colour lithograph illustration, this print anchors a living room gallery wall or brings warm reds and blues to a study or home office. Browse more in our Vintage Propaganda Posters collection to build a coordinated set.

About
this print.

01

Who created Sow the Seeds of Victory?

The illustration is credited to James Montgomery Flagg, whose signature appears within the art. It was issued in 1918 by the National War Garden Commission with Charles Lathrop Pack listed as President, promoting home vegetable gardens during the First World War.

02

What does the poster actually show?

It shows one young woman with long auburn hair in a red Phrygian cap and a gown patterned as the American flag, sandals on her feet. She strides forward scattering seed with her right hand while holding a round wooden seed basket against her left hip across a plowed field.

03

What lettering appears on the print?

The art carries the printed lines "Sow the seeds of Victory!" and "plant & raise your own vegetables," plus an invitation to write to the National War Garden Commission in Washington, D.C. A caption at the foot of the sheet reads "Every Garden a Munition Plant."

04

What sizes can I order?

This poster comes in three sizes: 11"x17", 22"x34" and 26"x40". Each retains the complete artwork with matching edge padding added where needed, so sizes in the exact-fit band may require light centred trimming. Every print ships unframed, flat in a protective mailer or rolled in a tube, depending on size.
