Questions about this print

What is The Secret Teachings of All Ages?

The Secret Teachings of All Ages is Manly P. Hall's illustrated encyclopedia of esoteric philosophy, published in 1928, covering Masonic, Hermetic, Kabbalistic and Rosicrucian symbolism. J. Augustus Knapp painted colour plates for the book, and this chakra plate is one of them, setting the energy centres of the body inside rings of blue light.

How is colour used in the composition of this chakra print?

Deep cobalt blue frames the scene, brightening through turquoise and pale aqua rings into near-white light around the head. Against this cool field, the chakra emblems shift from red and orange at the base through crimson and gold to a pale blue-white disc at the throat, while a yellow and violet spire rises above the crown.

What does as above so below mean?

"As above, so below" is a hermetic maxim meaning that patterns in the cosmos mirror patterns on earth and within us. Rooted in the Emerald Tablet, it expresses the idea that the macrocosm and microcosm reflect one another, a concept central to alchemy and esoteric thought.

What are the seven chakras?

In Indian yogic tradition, the chakras are centres of subtle energy along the spine, usually counted as seven, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. Knapp's plate shows them on a seated, meditating figure: five coloured emblems climbing to the throat, a light at the brow and a radiant crown of light above the head.
