Questions about this print

What is the Splendor Solis?

The Splendor Solis is a lavishly illustrated 16th-century alchemical manuscript, celebrated for its 22 painted plates. It depicts the stages of transformation toward the philosopher's stone through allegorical figures, flasks and vivid symbolism, making it one of the most admired works in the alchemical tradition.

What does the black banner above the philosopher say?

A black ribbon banner curls up from the neck of the flask and loops across the pale sky in gold Latin lettering. Its visible words include Quesitum, Quatuor and Elementorum, written in a looping script along the twisting band. The banner rises straight from the vessel the philosopher points to, linking the text to the flask itself.

What colours dominate the Splendor Solis Philosopher with Flask print?

Gold dominates: a wide burnished gold border fills most of the sheet, painted with green leaves, red berries and blue, purple and pink flowers. Inside, the philosopher's red cap and robe and his deep blue cloak stand out against a pale peach sky, soft blue hills and green ground, with a brown stag and doe resting below.

What does the Splendor Solis Philosopher with Flask print show?

It shows a bearded philosopher in a red cap, red robe and blue cloak pointing to a glass flask, with a black banner of Latin text winding up from its neck and a tree and blue hills behind him. A gilded border of flowers, songbirds, an owl, a peacock, a doe and a stag frames the scene.
