Questions about this print

What is The Secret Teachings of All Ages?

The Secret Teachings of All Ages is Manly P. Hall's encyclopedia of esoteric philosophy, published in 1928, covering the mysteries of ancient Egypt alongside Hermetic, Kabbalistic and Rosicrucian symbolism. J. Augustus Knapp painted colour plates for the book, and The Saitic Isis is one of them, picturing the goddess beneath the inscription that runs across the top.

What does Isis hold and wear in this Knapp print?

Isis stands before a pink curtain between two carved stone columns. A gold halo rings her head beneath a crown of flowers, a gold belt circles her waist, and she holds a sistrum in one hand. A pair of scales hangs at one side, a vessel at the other, and serpents coil at her feet.

What does as above so below mean?

"As above, so below" is a hermetic maxim meaning the cosmos and the individual mirror one another. What occurs in the heavens reflects in earthly life, and the greater universe echoes in the smaller self. It expresses the belief that all levels of reality are deeply interconnected.

Who is the Saitic Isis?

The name points to Sais, an ancient Egyptian city in the Nile Delta, where Plutarch recorded a temple inscription in which the veiled goddess declares that no mortal has lifted her veil. Knapp paints that line across the top of the plate, and at her feet adds a second inscription: "The fruit which I have brought forth is the Sun."
