Questions about this print

Who was J. Augustus Knapp?

J. Augustus Knapp was an American illustrator who painted colour plates for Manly P. Hall's The Secret Teachings of All Ages, the 1928 encyclopedia of esoteric philosophy. His portrait of Pythagoras is one of them, set between marble columns and filled with the geometry, number and music associated with the philosopher's school.

What paper is this Pythagoras of Crotona print made on, and what sizes are available?

This print is giclée printed on premium 230GSM archival matte paper for gallery-quality colour and detail. It comes in ten sizes: 5×7, 8×10, 11×14, 16×20, A3, 18×24, 20×25, 24×30, 24×36 and 32×40. It is sold unframed and ships rolled in a crush-resistant tube, so flatten it before framing.

What details surround Pythagoras in this painting?

Beyond the white pyramid in his raised hand, Pythagoras rests his fingers on a stone table holding scrolls, a glass flask, a compass and a hanging sheet with the theorem's checkered squares. A deep red globe sits behind, while at left a golden lyre leans beside a tablet drawn with a branching tree and small geometric marks.

Who was Pythagoras of Crotona?

Pythagoras was a Greek philosopher and mathematician of the sixth century BC who founded his school at Croton in southern Italy, the Crotona of the title. Knapp shows him holding up a white pyramid, with a lyre, a red globe, a drawing of the Pythagorean theorem and a triangle of dots in the sky above him.
