Questions about this print

Who was J. Augustus Knapp?

J. Augustus Knapp was an American illustrator best known for the colour plates he painted for Manly P. Hall's The Secret Teachings of All Ages, published in 1928. This plate of a magician invoking the elementals is one of them, picturing an occult idea as a full, theatrical scene in saturated colour.

How is the magician himself depicted in this Knapp print?

The magician wears a gold crown and has a long white beard and hair. His violet robe opens over a white gown tied with a red sash bearing a gold emblem. He raises a wand in one hand, lifts the other arm skyward, and stands barefoot inside concentric circles drawn on the rocky shore, Knapp's signature at lower right.

What does as above so below mean?

As above, so below is a hermetic maxim expressing that the patterns of the cosmos mirror those of the earthly and human realms. Drawn from the Emerald Tablet, it suggests that understanding one level of reality reveals the others. The phrase underpins much of astrology, alchemy and occult philosophy.

What are elementals?

In Western occult tradition, elementals are spirits of the four elements, usually named salamanders for fire, undines for water, sylphs for air and gnomes for earth. Knapp's plate gathers them around a crowned magician in a violet robe standing in a drawn circle, with flames along the far shore, undines in the water and gnomes on the rocks.
