Questions about this print

Who was J. Augustus Knapp?

J. Augustus Knapp was an American illustrator who painted colour plates for Manly P. Hall's The Secret Teachings of All Ages, published in 1928. His plates turn Gnostic, Hermetic and Kabbalistic ideas into clear, richly coloured scenes, and the plate of Abraxas, the Gnostic Pantheos, is one of them, showing the god in full motion against a deep blue sky.

What details appear on the shield and chariot in this Abraxas print?

The figure's round golden shield carries a radiating, spoked pattern, and the gold chariot below bears a red-orange flower-like wheel. The serpent legs end in two heads that appear to hold the reins, linking the deity to the four white horses. A thin gold halo circles the rooster head, and a long whip curls upward toward the dark crescent moon.

What colours and lettering appear in this Abraxas print?

The palette is dominated by an ultramarine sky over a bank of blue clouds. Against it sit the gold of the armour, shield and chariot, the red of the rooster's comb and wattle, and the four white horses. A golden sun glows at upper left, a dark crescent moon at upper right, and ABRAXAS is lettered in capitals below.

Who is Abraxas?

Abraxas is a name from Gnostic tradition, shown on ancient carved gems as a figure with a rooster's head, an armoured body and serpent legs, holding a whip and a shield. Knapp's plate keeps those attributes and drives the figure across the clouds in a chariot pulled by four white horses, under a sun and a dark crescent moon.
