Questions about this print

What is a WPA poster?

A WPA poster is artwork produced by the Works Progress Administration during the 1930s and 1940s. Artists used bold, flat colours and simple typography to promote travel, national parks and public programmes. The Library of Congress keeps a copy of this design in its Work Projects Administration Poster Collection.

Who designed the National Parks Preserve Wild Life poster?

J. Hirt designed it in 1939, and its bottom edge credits the Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project in New York City. The National Park Service names it among at least four New York wildlife-protection posters, separate from the 1938-1941 park poster series made in Berkeley, California. The Library of Congress copy is date-stamped August 23, 1939.

What does the National Parks Preserve Wild Life poster show?

Two bighorn sheep with curled horns stand on a grey rock ledge and look toward the viewer against an orange-to-yellow sky. A lake, a dark treeline and a blue mountain sit at the lower left, and a small USA Work WPA stamp marks the bottom right corner beside the Federal Art Project credit.

Where can I find the National Parks Preserve Wild Life poster?

Here at Haus of Prints, as a giclée reproduction of J. Hirt's 1939 design on archival matte paper in ten sizes: 5×7, 8×10, 11×14, 16×20, A3, 18×24, 20×25, 24×30, 24×36 and 32×40. Each print shows the two bighorn sheep on their rocky ledge above the slogan 'The National Parks Preserve Wild Life'.
