Questions about this print

Which scene from Dante's Inferno does this engraving show?

It illustrates the end of Canto XXXIV. After climbing down Lucifer's body and past the centre of the earth, Dante and Virgil follow a hidden path upward toward the world above, guided by the sound of a small stream. It comes from Gustave Doré's illustrated edition of the Inferno, published in Paris in 1861.

Who illustrated Dante's Inferno?

Gustave Dore, the French artist, illustrated Dante's Divine Comedy, including the Inferno in 1861 and the Purgatorio and Paradiso in 1868. His dramatic wood engravings capture shadowed gorges, tormented souls and towering landscapes, and still shape how readers picture Dante's epic poem.

Where do Dante and Virgil go after leaving Hell?

They come out on the shore of an island in the southern hemisphere, at the foot of the mountain of Purgatory. The second part of the poem, the Purgatorio, begins there at dawn on Easter Sunday, as they start the climb.

What small details can you spot in this engraving?

Look for the laurel wreaths crowning both robed figures as they stand on a rocky ledge. A massive overhang on the left and sheer cliffs on the right frame a bright opening onto clouded sky, distant mountains and pale water. Bare, thorny branches sit near the gap, and the name PISAN is engraved in the lower right corner.
