Questions about this print

What is a celestial map?

A celestial map charts the stars, constellations and coordinates of the night sky, translating the heavens onto paper. Historical examples like Urania's Mirror pair scientific star positions with mythological figures, so Orion appears both as plotted stars and as a warrior, blending astronomy with classical art.

Who made the Urania's Mirror cards?

This Taurus card is one of 32 constellation cards in Urania's Mirror, published in London by Samuel Leigh in November 1824. The cards were said to be designed by "a lady"; a document later found by P. D. Hingley names the Reverend Richard Rouse Bloxam as their author. The figures follow Alexander Jamieson's A Celestial Atlas.

Which neighbouring constellations are labelled around the bull on this Taurus card?

Seven neighbours are named around the bull. Auriga and Perseus run along the top edge, Gemini down the left side and Orion in the lower left, with Betelgeuse, Bellatrix and Orion's Belt marked. Eridanus curves along the bottom, Aries sits on the right and Cetus, with Menkar, fills the lower right corner. Pl. 17 is printed top right.

What does the Taurus card from Urania's Mirror show?

The 1824 Taurus card shows the charging bull picked out in sized stars on a hand-coloured chart. Urania's Mirror cards were punched so the constellation glowed when held to a candle. This print reproduces the antique plate as an archival matte giclée, made to order in ten sizes.
