Questions about this print

What is a celestial map?

A celestial map charts the stars, constellations and coordinates of the night sky, translating the heavens onto paper. Historical examples like Urania's Mirror pair scientific star positions with mythological figures, so Orion appears both as plotted stars and as a warrior, blending astronomy with classical art.

Who made the Urania's Mirror cards?

This Pisces card is one of 32 constellation cards in Urania's Mirror, published in London by Samuel Leigh in November 1824. The cards were said to be designed by "a lady"; a document later found by P. D. Hingley names the Reverend Richard Rouse Bloxam as their author. The figures follow Alexander Jamieson's A Celestial Atlas.

Which stars and constellations are labelled on this Pisces print?

Capital lettering around the dotted boundary names Andromeda, Pegasus, Aries, Cetus and Aquarius. Named stars include Alpheratz near the top, Scheat, Markab and Algenib across the Pegasus side, Mesarthim beside Aries, Mira at lower left and Deneb Kaitos Schemali along the bottom edge. A small compass rose sits at the top right, and the plate is numbered Pl. 27.

What does the Pisces card from Urania's Mirror show?

The 1824 Pisces card shows the two fishes joined by a flowing red ribbon dotted with stars, each star sized by its brightness in the night sky. The original cards were punched so the constellations glowed when held to a candle. This print reproduces the hand-coloured chart as an archival matte giclée in ten sizes.
