Questions about this print

Who created the Shrine of St Nicholas image?

It is a reproduction of an 1882 wood engraving by Thomas Nast, the American illustrator known for shaping the modern picture of Santa Claus. The scene shows Santa seated on a lettered Christmas box, reaching toward children, with the caption naming it the Shrine of St. Nicholas.

Why is this print black and white?

The original was a pen-and-ink wood engraving, so the art is monochrome by nature. You see black line work on cream paper in tones of black, white, beige and gray. Our giclée process preserves the fine hatching, the icicles and the many small faces without adding colour.

Is this an original antique print or a reproduction?

This is a giclée reproduction of a public-domain 1882 Thomas Nast engraving, not an original 19th-century impression. It is printed on 230GSM archival matte paper so you get the detail of the historic image in a fresh, durable print ready to frame.

What size works for a living room wall?

For a living room feature above a sofa or sideboard, the 24×30 or 24×36 size reads well from across the room. In a hallway or snug corner, 16×20 or 18×24 suits closer viewing. Ten sizes run from 5×7 up to 32×40.

01 / About this print
