This is a reproduction of a Thomas Nast pen-and-ink illustration, signed Th Nast within the art. The scene appeared in Harper's Weekly on December 25, 1886, with an upright book lettered CHRISTMAS SKETCHES ILLUSTRATED shown among the props. Nast worked in dense crosshatched line engraving during the later nineteenth century.
