Questions about this print

Who created this Christmas Eve engraving and when?

The image comes from Thomas Nast, the German-American cartoonist whose Civil War era Christmas engravings ran in Harper's Weekly during the 1860s. This is a giclee reproduction of that public-domain wood engraving, printed on archival matte paper rather than an original antique sheet.

What scenes are shown inside the two wreaths?

Two holly and evergreen circles hold the composition. The left wreath shows a woman kneeling in prayer at a moonlit window with children asleep nearby; the right shows a bearded soldier seated by a campfire with a rifle. Sleighs, flags, gravestones and distant rooftops fill the surrounding scene.

Why is the print black and white instead of colour?

Nast worked in wood engraving, a monochrome technique built from fine engraved lines that create tonal shading. The original was printed in black ink on cream paper, so our reproduction keeps that true black, white, gray and beige palette instead of adding invented colour.

What size works for a living room wall?

For a living room feature above a sofa or mantel, choose 24×36 or 32×40 so the detailed engraving reads from across the room. In a study or bedroom, 16×20 or 18×24 holds its own. Smaller sizes like 11×14 suit gallery groupings.
