Questions about this print

Who was J. Augustus Knapp?

J. Augustus Knapp was an American illustrator who painted colour plates for Manly P. Hall's The Secret Teachings of All Ages, published in 1928. His plates turn Hermetic, Kabbalistic and Rosicrucian ideas into painted scenes and emblems, and this Tree of the Sephiroth is one of them, rendered as a living tree rather than a diagram.

What details appear in the tree's foliage and at its base?

The green foliage is scattered with small yellow florets circling a larger white radiant blossom at its centre, while dark reddish-brown roots branch outward from the crowned trunk through the leaves. At the base sit four overlapping circles in white, red, green and pale blue-grey, set against horizontal bands of blue that deepen toward the bottom.

What does as above so below mean?

As above, so below is a hermetic maxim meaning the greater universe and the individual mirror one another. Drawn from the Emerald Tablet, it teaches that patterns in the cosmos are reflected on Earth and within us. The phrase underpins astrology, magic and much esoteric philosophy.

What is the Tree of the Sephiroth?

In Kabbalah, the Tree of the Sephiroth, also called the Tree of Life, arranges the ten sephiroth, the emanations through which the divine is said to reach creation. Knapp paints it as an inverted tree that grows down from a jewelled crown in a white triangle and ends in four overlapping coloured circles; Kether, the highest sephirah, means Crown.
