What is the Dance of Death series?
It is a set of woodcuts designed by Hans Holbein and first published in 1538, in which Death comes for people of every rank, from the pope and the emperor to the merchant and the ploughman. Each scene catches someone in the middle of ordinary life, as here with a trader on the road.
