Questions about this print

What does the Hannya Oni mask symbolize?

In Japanese art the Hannya oni mask represents fierce, transformed emotion and protective ferocity. On this print the horned blue-and-gold mask with its fanged grin pairs the samurai's fur cloak and twin katana with a snarling tiger, reading as a guardian image of raw power rather than pure menace.

Are Oni mask and Hannya mask the same?

Not exactly. Oni is the broad term for Japanese demons, while Hannya is a specific horned, fanged female-demon mask from Noh theatre. The mask worn by the standing samurai here shows the horns, fangs and grimacing grin typical of Hannya, rendered in cobalt blue and gold linework.

What are Japanese woodblock prints called?

They are called ukiyo-e, meaning pictures of the floating world. This illustration is drawn in that ukiyo-e style, using fine gold linework and a flat palette of black, cobalt blue, gold, white and red so the masked figure and blue tiger float against a mottled pale ground.

What size should I choose for a living room wall?

For a living room feature wall, larger sizes like 24×36 or 32×40 hold their own above a sofa or console, while 16×20 or A3 suit a study or gallery grouping. All ten sizes print on the same 230GSM archival matte paper and ship unframed.
