Questions about this print

Which scene from Dante's Inferno does this engraving show?

It illustrates Canto XXXIII. Count Ugolino tells Dante how he and his sons and grandsons were locked in a tower in Pisa and left to starve, and this plate shows them in their cell. It comes from Gustave Doré's illustrated edition of the Inferno, published in Paris in 1861.

Who illustrated Dante's Inferno?

Gustave Doré illustrated Dante's Inferno and paid to publish it himself in 1861; his illustrated Purgatorio and Paradiso followed in 1868. Block cutters engraved his drawings on wood. This print reproduces one of his monochrome Canto XXXIII plates, signed G. Doré at lower left and by the engraver at lower right.

Who was Count Ugolino?

Ugolino della Gherardesca was a Pisan nobleman imprisoned in 1288 by the faction of Archbishop Ruggieri, who left him to starve with his sons and grandsons in 1289. Dante finds the two men frozen together in the ice of the ninth circle, Ugolino gnawing the archbishop's head.

How are the light and figures arranged in this engraving?

Light falls from a barred window at upper left onto a seated central figure, who hunches with a hand raised to his face while younger figures cling to him or lie collapsed on the stone floor. A second barred opening sits deep in a dark archway at right, and fine crosshatched lines build the masonry walls and vaulted ceiling.
