Questions about this print

Who was Dante Alighieri?

Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) was a poet from Florence and the author of the Divine Comedy. Exiled from Florence in 1302 for his part in the city's politics, he wrote the poem in exile and died in Ravenna, where he is buried. This engraving shows him in profile, crowned with laurel.

Who illustrated Dante's Inferno?

Gustave Dore, the French artist, illustrated Dante's Inferno in the 1860s. His dramatic wood engravings defined how generations picture the Divine Comedy. This profile of Dante belongs to that engraved tradition, with the Pannemaker name marking the master engraver who cut the block.

Why is Dante shown with a laurel crown?

The laurel crown was the classical honour for a great poet. In the Paradiso Dante writes that he hoped to return to Florence as a poet and take 'the laurel crown' at the font where he was baptised, but he died in exile without receiving it.

What details can you see in this Dante engraving?

The engraving shows Dante in right-facing profile against a near-black background, wearing a draped hood with long side flaps beneath a laurel wreath with small berries. His high-collared garment closes with small buttons, and fine parallel hatching models every fold. A signature appears lower left, with the Pannemaker name lower right.
