Questions about this print

Which scene from Dante's Inferno does this engraving show?

It illustrates Canto XIII, the wood of the suicides in the seventh circle. The souls of those who took their own lives are imprisoned in leafless, twisted trees, shown here with faces in the bark, while black hounds hunt through the wood. It comes from Gustave Doré's illustrated edition of the Inferno, published in Paris in 1861.

Who illustrated Dante's Inferno?

Gustave Doré illustrated Dante's Inferno, producing his celebrated engravings in the 1860s. The French artist's dramatic light, dense line work and haunted landscapes defined how generations pictured the poem. His forest scenes, like this bare-tree study, share the same brooding atmosphere and mastery of shadow found across his literary illustrations.

Who is chased through the wood of the suicides in Dante's Inferno?

Two squanderers, who wasted their fortunes, run through the wood pursued by black hounds that catch one of them and tear him apart. Dante places the violent against themselves and against their own property together in this second ring of the seventh circle.

Where are the hidden faces in this Doré forest print?

Several faces hide in the bark. A bearded face stares out from the central trunk above its fork, another emerges from a knotted trunk at lower left, and a third peers out from the right edge. A dark hound bounds through the undergrowth at lower right, and the pale trunks stand against dense hatching that fills the sheet.
