It illustrates Canto XII. In the first ring of the seventh circle, centaurs armed with bows run along a river of boiling blood and shoot any soul that rises out of it further than its crime allows. It comes from Gustave Doré's illustrated edition of the Inferno, published in Paris in 1861.
