Which scene from Dante's Inferno does this engraving show?
It illustrates Canto XXXIV, the last canto of the Inferno. Lucifer stands frozen from mid-chest in the ice at the centre of Hell, and the beating of his six bat-like wings sends out the winds that keep the lake frozen. It comes from Gustave Doré's illustrated edition of the Inferno, published in Paris in 1861.
