Questions about this print

Which scene from Dante's Inferno does this engraving show?

It illustrates Canto I. Lost in a dark wood, Dante tries to climb a sunlit hill and is driven back by three beasts: a leopard, a lion and a she-wolf. This plate shows him facing the lion. It comes from Gustave Doré's illustrated edition of the Inferno, published in Paris in 1861.

Who illustrated Dante's Inferno?

Gustave Doré illustrated Dante's Inferno, producing his celebrated engravings for The Divine Comedy in the 1860s. The French artist's dramatic light, deep shadow and intricate detail defined how generations pictured Dante's journey, and his Dante illustrations appeared in roughly 200 editions.

What do the three beasts in Canto I of Dante's Inferno mean?

Most readers take the leopard, the lion and the she-wolf as three kinds of sin, commonly read as lust, pride and greed. They drive Dante back toward the dark wood until Virgil appears and offers him another way out, through Hell.

How do light and composition draw the eye in this engraving?

Light concentrates in a pale notch of sky between the ravine's steep walls, then falls on the lion, picked out in bright tones on a rock at right. Dante stands small and dark at left among gnarled roots. Dense engraved lines keep the surrounding trees and slopes in deep shadow, drawing the eye toward the confrontation.
