Questions about this print

Which scene from Dante's Inferno does this engraving show?

It illustrates Canto IV of the Inferno, set in Limbo, where Dante and Virgil meet the great poets of antiquity: Homer, Horace, Ovid and Lucan. Gustave Doré designed it for his 1861 edition of the Inferno, the first book of a series of illustrated literary masterpieces that he planned.

Who illustrated Dante's Inferno?

Gustave Doré illustrated Dante's Inferno, producing dramatic wood engravings in the 1860s that still shape how readers picture the poem. His mastery of light, shadow and crowded figures is seen here in Assembly of the Poets, and his Divine Comedy engravings achieved great international success.

What is Limbo in Dante's Inferno?

Limbo is the first circle of Hell. It holds unbaptised souls and virtuous people who lived before Christ, who suffer no torment except a longing for God that will never be met. Virgil lives there, and it is where Dante meets Homer, Horace, Ovid and Lucan.

How is light and shadow arranged in this Assembly of the Poets engraving?

Light falls on a small grassy clearing where about a dozen robed poets gather, some standing in conversation, others seated on rocks at left and right. Dense, finely engraved trees fill the upper two-thirds in deep shadow, faint distant figures appear at right, and the Doré signature and PANNEMAKER mark sit in the lower corners.
