Questions about this print

Which scene from Dante's Inferno does this engraving show?

It illustrates Canto IX. The fallen angels have shut the gates of the city of Dis against Dante and Virgil, until a messenger sent from Heaven arrives, opens the gate with a small wand and scatters the demons. It comes from Gustave Doré's illustrated edition of the Inferno, published in Paris in 1861.

Who illustrated Dante's Inferno?

Gustave Dore, the celebrated French artist, illustrated Dante's Divine Comedy in the 1860s. His dramatic wood engravings of the Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso became so closely tied to the poem that they still shape how readers picture it. This print reproduces one of his radiant angelic scenes from that body of work.

What is the city of Dis in Dante's Inferno?

Dis is the walled city that holds the lower part of Hell, from the sixth circle down. Fallen angels guard its gates. Inside the walls Dante finds the heretics in burning tombs and, further down, the violent, the fraudulent and the traitors.
