Questions about this print

Why is The Birds of America book so expensive?

The Birds of America is costly because of its extreme rarity, enormous double-elephant folio size and the hand-coloured aquatint engravings behind each plate. About 120 complete original copies are known to survive, and their historical and artistic importance drives auction prices into the millions, making it one of the most valuable printed books ever produced.

Which Audubon plate is this heron print based on?

This print is based on Plate 211, Great blue Heron, from John James Audubon's The Birds of America (1827–1838). It is an adaptation, not the plate itself: the heron keeps Audubon's raised wings and lowered head, while the plate's blank paper background is replaced by a wide marsh landscape with blue sky, clouds, rocks and dense reeds.

How many copies of Birds of America are there?

Around 200 complete original copies of The Birds of America were produced during Audubon's lifetime, and roughly 120 are believed to survive today. Many are held by museums, libraries and universities, with only a handful remaining in private hands, which explains their scarcity and enduring collectible value.

How much is The Birds of America book worth?

Complete original editions of The Birds of America have sold at auction for between roughly 5.6 and 11.5 million dollars, with one copy reaching over 11 million. Value depends on condition, completeness and provenance. Individual original plates can also fetch thousands, while quality reproductions remain affordable.
