Questions about this print

Why is The Birds of America book so expensive?

The Birds of America is costly because it is rare, enormous and historically significant. Audubon hand-produced roughly 200 complete double-elephant folio sets, each with 435 life-size hand-coloured plates. Its scale, artistry and scientific importance make surviving copies among the most sought-after books at auction worldwide.

Which Birds of America plate shows the great blue heron?

The great blue heron is Plate 211 of The Birds of America, the double-elephant folio issued in London between 1827 and 1838. This print reproduces that hand-coloured plate: the slate-grey heron bends its neck down toward a strip of water above pale grasses on a brown rock, with the engraved caption at the foot.

How many copies of Birds of America are there?

Around 200 complete sets of the original double-elephant folio were produced, and roughly 120 are believed to survive today. Most are held by museums, universities and libraries, with only a handful in private hands, which is why intact copies rarely appear on the open market.

How much is The Birds of America book worth?

Complete original sets have sold for extraordinary sums, with copies fetching between roughly 7 and 12 million dollars at major auctions. Value depends on condition, colouring quality and provenance. Individual original plates also command high prices, while quality reproductions like this print remain far more accessible.
