Questions about this print

Who is the artist behind Old Joe's Shop?

Arthur Rackham drew this scene, reproduced here from a plate in the 1915 edition of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Rackham worked in pen and ink with a watercolour wash, and his signature is lettered inside the art. This giclée is a faithful reproduction of that public-domain illustration.

What is happening in this illustration?

The scene shows ragged figures bartering stolen goods in Old Joe's den. A kneeling bearded man in a top hat holds up a purple bed-curtain with brass rings while two older women and an overcoated man look on, and a faint face peers from the shadows at the lower left. The printed caption reads, "What do you call this?" said Joe. "Bed-curtains!"

What colours are in this print?

The palette is muted sepia, brown, cream and grey, built from a pen-and-ink drawing with watercolour wash. A purple accent glows on the bed-curtain, warm orange-brown flame tones flicker in the fire at the upper left, and red stripes appear on the bundled cloth and in the patterned drapery at the right edge.

Is this an original antique print or a reproduction?

This is a modern giclée reproduction of Arthur Rackham's public-domain 1915 illustration, not an original plate. It is printed on premium 230GSM archival matte paper in ten sizes and ships unframed, flat in a protective mailer or rolled in a crush-resistant tube, depending on size. You receive a fresh, gallery-quality print ready to frame.
